Our history

Our history

According to legend, the town of Zbiroh was founded by Zbyněk Zajíc of Valdek, who lost his way during one of his hunts with his party. After dusk they found a place to spend the night, where a surprise awaited them in the morning, with deer antlers lying all around. Zbyněk had them collected and decided to build a castle on the spot. And it was collecting the antlers that gave him the name Zbiroh. Seven centuries later, Alfons Mucha created his most famous work, the Slavonic Epic, here. The tradition of ironworking in the Zbiroh region dates back to the Middle Ages. The first mention of ironworking in the area dates back to 1379, when the town directory of the Rozmberk estates mentions the Strašice ironworks.

A craft with a long tradition in this region was the production of studs at home. In Zbiroh, the stud-making workshop was located in Sládkova Street No. 174 and was founded in 1860 by Václav Kreisinger. Later, he gradually added and expanded the range of products to include several types of pliers, hammers and sticks. The stud-making industry gradually began to recede, mainly because of its difficulty and handmade nature, and with the gradual introduction of factory production of studs.

In 1881, Kreisinger's son-in-law Jan Klekner took over the established production. Customers from Vienna, Hungary, Poland and Italy showed interest in the factory's products, and the factory gradually began to expand. As a trademark to symbolise strength, endurance and tenacity, the plant management of the time chose the symbol of the 'teddy bear'.

Another milestone in the company's history was in 1929, when the plant was sold at public auction to Otto Taussig. The name ZBIROVIA Zbiroh and the new trademark "Z" in the traverse, which ZBIROVIA, a.s. still uses today, first appear in the business name.

In the following years, JUDr. Zdeněk Taussig, son of Otto Taussig, took over Zbirovia from his late father and ran the plant until 1939, when he fled Czechoslovakia from the occupants. Under the authority of the Reich Protector in Bohemia and Moravia, the factory was given a new boss and later owner in the person of Major Hans Wred. After his accession, he almost immediately liquidated the production and especially the export of tools and introduced the production of weapons for the war effort.

In the post-war years, ZBIROVIA returned to the production of its traditional product range and gradually, unlike in the pre-war years, the management of the plant changed from one owner to another.

The modern history of ZBIROVIA began in 1957, when ZBIROVIA Zbiroh was incorporated into the TONA Pečky company and then in 1968, as part of the reorganization of the Czechoslovak economy, the ZBIROVIA plant was incorporated into the Nářadí Praha company under the Narex export brand. All this was done despite a fire in the new large hall in 1961, which completely destroyed it.

After the social changes, ZBIROVIA became a state enterprise with full legal personality on 1 November 1990 and subsequently on 1 January 1991 its legal personality was changed and it was registered as a joint stock company ZBIROVIA, a.s. with its registered office in Zbiroz and later privatized in the first wave of coupon privatization.
